PLEASE SPEAK TO YOUR CHILD ABOUT THE FOLLOWING IMPORTANT TOPCS:

SNACKS AT SCHOOL: Please remind your children that there is no sharing of snacks at school. There are many children with food allergies that pose a danger to their health. Students may know that they are not supposed to eat certain foods, but when tempted, may not be able to resist. There is also the risk of bacteria that may be passed through sharing of snacks.

STRAIGHT HOME AFTER SCHOOL: Please remind your child to go straight home after school. Please avoid having them play in the playground as there is no after school supervision. Many children think it’s okay to play in the playground if they see others playing there, therefore worrying parents who are either waiting for them in the car, or waiting for them to arrive at home. We know that it is natural for children to want to stay and play in the playground after school. Just remind them that the area is reserved for the A+ program, and that may help them to understand that they must go straight home after the bell rings. Having students go home right after school also limits altercations of fights and graffiti on the school campus.

Also, please remind your child not to accept or ask for rides from anyone but yourself. If the weather is not conducive to walking home, have a plan for your child to follow. For example if it is raining, wait for mom to pick you up, or call home for a ride.

ARRIVAL IN THE MORNING: Please remind your child to enter their classrooms through the front door in the morning before school. Since there is no supervision before school, students are told to wait in an orderly manner outside the front door of their classroom. Sometimes waiting near the back door where no one is watching may pose a safety concern if they were to get hurt and no one is around.

Thank you for sharing these concerns with your child(ren). We appreciate your support and understanding in helping Kaneohe Elementary promote a safe and healthy environment. We appreciate it!

SHOW YOU CARE AND SHARE A BEAR: The 6th graders will be collecting new or gently used teddy bears or stuffed animals to donate to Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii. The 6th graders will be on the walkway next week, April 21st to 25th in the morning before school between 7:15 and 7:45 near building F. If you have an extra teddy bear or stuffed animal that you would like to donate to this worthy cause, please remember to bring it to school.

Bravo to all who have made this wonderful musical a success! Sidney Palea, Pono Makekau, Trystin Ramos, Brittany Bardsley Marcial, Reece Goo, Kacey Yokotake, Anuhea Ignacio, Coen Alimoot were all exceptional in their delivery of song and dance. Our former students, Michael Vith and Matthew Mazzella were a splashing success also. Mahalo to Ron Bright for his marvelous leadership, determination and effort, to George Kon and Walt Dulaney from the Alliance for Drama Education, and to Karen Meyer for her limitless energy and positive spirit! HOME ENERGY CHALLENGE UPDATE:
Please conserve energy whenever possible.
Energy Tip #19: Choose the smallest system that is adequate to cool the required space during a hot day. A properly sized air conditioner will lower the temperature to an acceptable level and dehumidify the area as well. An oversized air conditioner may not be the most economical and efficient way to cool your home. The purchase cost is higher and it will cost more to run. Frequent on/off cycling to adjust the temperature in the room may increase wear and tear on the compressor. An oversized air conditioner may not remove moisture as effectively as a properly sized unit, making the room feel cold and clammy. In Hawaiis humid climate, removing moisture is an important aspect of maintaining a comfortable home. Visit www.EnergyStar.gov to learn more.

PARKING LOT SAFETY:
Please be very careful when parking or just dropping off your child. Do not let your child out of the car even if escorted by an adult in the lane that enters the schools top lot because it is not safe. Proceed around the circle and drop off only on the cafeteria side. Try to come 10 minutes earlier so you wont need to rush. Please also make sure that your child in on the sidewalk away from the car before driving off. Many times items slip out of the car and your child bends down to pick it up without you noticing. Please take a second glace to make sure your child is away from the car and on the sidewalk heading towards class. Safety is of top priority and just a few extra minutes of your time will make a great difference. Thank you for your concern and support!

Portraits of Hawaii will take your childs picture then send home a package of pictures, hopefully before the break. Keep and pay for the ones you want and send the rest back to school. If you like all of them, you can keep the whole package and just send back the payment.

Telephones in the classrooms:
We are so thankful that our classrooms are finally equipped with telephones. If you would like to call a teacher who has left a message for you, please use the school number 233-5633 instead of the number that may appear on your caller ID.

SQS-SCHOOL QUALITY SURVEY-DUE SOON:
All parents of students in grades 4 and 5 received the SQS on February 1, 2008. Please fill out the form and send them back via mail by the end of February. Thank you so much for your assistance in helping our school collect data on our performance.

HOME ENERGY CHALLENGE UPDATE:
Please conserve energy whenever possible. Energy Tip #19: Look for the Energy Star label on Air Conditioners before purchasing. Earning the Energy Star means a product meets strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. Energy Star qualified room air conditioners use at least 10% less energy than conventional models. Visit www.EnergyStar.gov to learn more.

SPRING FUNDRAISER PICK-UP:
Pick up for the Spring Fundraiser is Saturday, March 8, 2008.

A+ TAX ID NUMBER:
If interested, the A+ federal tax number is 99-0266482.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION IN PROGRESS:
The Windward District Kindergarten registration dates will be from February 1, 2008 to February 15, 2008, inclusive to accommodate geographic exception requests processed according to Chapter 13, Geographic Exceptions and NCLB guidelines. When registering please bring in your childs birth certificate, which the office will copy. Your child must by 5 years old by December 31, 2008 to register.

HOME ENERGY CHALLENGE UPDATE:
Please conserve energy whenever possible.
Energy Tip #18: Always use cold water to rinse. Set water level to the size of the load. Did you know that saving water also saves energy? By conserving water (whether hot or cold) you are saving the energy it takes to pump it, clean it, heat it, and treat it later. Visit www.EnergyStar.gov to learn more.

NIKETOWN DONATIONS:
We would like to thank NIKETOWN and all of you who supported this event. We received $420, which will be used to support our P.E. programs and play equipment. Thank you, we appreciate it!

HOME ENERGY CHALLENGE UPDATE:
Please conserve energy whenever possible. We are doing a wonderful job conserving energy, as energy usage of families that have signed up for the Home Energy Challenge is less than last years usage. Energy Tip #17: Use a cold water wash whenever possible. A warm or hot water wash may only be needed for cloths that are soiled with grease or oil, diapers, and white loads. Since water-heating accounts for 90% of the energy used by your washing machine, the best energy conservation strategy involves using cooler wash and rinse cycles and reducing the amount of water used per cycle. FIRE ON CAMPUS:
On Friday, January 11, 2008, we experienced a small fire in room 1. It was fortunate that it was a day without students. A wall fan caught on fire and fell to the carpet. The fire was extinguished by our Head Custodian, Daniel Dela Cruz even before the fire department arrived. The Fire Inspector was on campus shortly there after and it was confirmed that the motor of the fan burned out and that it was an isolated incident. We will be checking all the fans in our classrooms to ensure their safety. The students that are serviced in room 1 will be moved to room 20 for a couple of weeks while the room is cleaned and restored. If you have any questions or concerns, contact our Principal Mr. Otani at 233-5633.

HOME ENERGY CHALLENGE UPDATE
The Home Energy Challenge is on! Please conserve energy whenever possible.
Energy Tip #14: Dry full loads instead of several smaller loads as this wastes energy. Try combining two washer loads into one dryer load. But be careful not to overload the dryer, as this will cause wrinkling and uneven drying. Air needs to be able to circulate freely for adequate drying. Visit www.EnergyStar.gov to learn more.

The Home Energy Challenge is on! Please conserve energy whenever possible.
Energy Tip #13: Try not to overdry your clothes. Using your auto-dry setting will help. If you dont have this setting and have to use a timer, set it for less drying time. Most people overestimate drying time, which wastes a lot of energy. Try taking clothes out when they are slightly damp and hanging them up. This reduces the need for ironing, another energy user. Overdrying causes shrinkage, more static electricity, and more wear and tear on your clothes. Visit www.EnergyStar.gov to learn more.

New Report Cards
This year, Kaneohe Elementary School along with all other public elementary schools in Hawaii, will be using a new standards-based report card. You may recall that schools have been using the Hawaii Content and Performance Standards (HCPS) for instruction and assessment for several years. These Standards make it clear what a child is expected to know and be able to do. Now, the Department of Education has created a report card for teachers to communicate each students progress towards and achievement of these standards.

The new report card contains two types of reports that are sent home: the Quarter Report and the Status Report. The Quarter Report, sent home at mid-semester, provides students and parents a check up or progress report on how well the student is progressing toward meeting Standards. At the end of the semester, the Status Report gives a summary report of the students achievement of the standards for that reporting period.

The Department of Education hopes the new standards-based report card will help everyone understand a students interests, strengths, and talents relative to the standards. With this information, steps can be taken to improve school performance and to make learning fun.

For more information, visit the Departments Report Card Website at http://reportcard.k12.hi.us. -->

Castle Complex 5 R Program
The Castle Complex Curriculum Alignment Project began in 2001 and has evolved into what it is today, the Castle Complex 5Rs. The 5Rs are
  • 1. Respect
  • 2. Responsibility
  • 3. Resourcefulness
  • 4. Relationships
  • 5. Resiliency
We are integrating these into our Character Education Program at Kaneohe Elementary for school year 2005-06.

    Handicapped Parking
Please do not park in the handicapped parking stalls. These are reserved for those who display a handicapped parking pass. There is a fine of $260 if you are parked in a handicapped stall and receive a citation. We have many parents or family members who need to park in handicapped stalls but those who are dropping off or picking up students who do not display the handicapped parking pass take them. If you do possess a handicapped parking pass and a car not displaying the pass takes a stall, you may call 911 and a police officer will assist you, and cite the car in the space. Thank you all for your cooperation.

    Loading Zone Parking
Please do not park in the loading zone fronting the school by the cafeteria. We have traffic jams during drop off and pick up times if cars are blocking the exit lane. You may park off the lane in the grassy area in the turn around (not on the medial circle) or on Mokulele Drive if necessary. Thank you again for your cooperation.

If you are in need of a tutor for your child, call 211. Aloha United Way sponsors a tutoring program that many of us may not be aware of.

    Tardies
Attendance is very important to us at Kaneohe Elementary. We are concerned about tardies and we believe that coming to school late creates two problems :
  • 1.   Your child will enter the classroom late and he/she may feel uneasy.
  • 2.   Coming to school late fosters a value that your child may retain. This may become a serious problem later when your child enters intermediate and high school and eventually, the work force.

Please help your child be a responsible student by having them in class, ready to begin the day, ON TIME. Students should be in school by 7:50 daily.

    Playground
Please remember part of our playground rules are that adult supervision is a must. Please remind your children not to play on the equipment after school while they are waiting to be picked up. Thank you for your cooperation.
