ATTENDANCE:
Classroom doors open at 7:45 A.M. First bell is 7:50 A.M. School starts at 7:55 A.M. with the bugle for the flag. If your child is absent, please call the office at 233-5633 before 9:00 A.M. You may request homework/assignments to be picked up at the office after school (2:00-4:00 P.M.). Kaneohe Elementary feels that being in school every day, on time is very important. We cannot overemphasize this for we know that habits formed during a child's elementary school years are carried over into intermediate and high school, at which time, the consequences are more severe and we see an increase in the number of high school drop-outs. If you need assistance or advice to get your child up and ready for school, please contact Jeanne Bissen [counselor] for suggestions.

SNACKS:
The following snacks are not allowed: Lollipops, gum, raw saimin, jello/pudding mixes, Chinese seeds, sunflower/pumpkin seeds. Students are not allowed to share snacks due to health concerns.

FURLOUGH FRIDAYS
Hawaii's public schools are facing unprecedented budget cuts over the next two years totaling $468 million. The contract for ALL of the public employee unions will help the Department of Education address a portion of our budget shortfalls. Furloughs are difficult and will require us to work together as a community to provide alternative learning opportunities and experiences for our students. This is a very sensitive time for all of us and we are well aware of the challenges that furloughs present to all of us. We will be crafting a plan of action that will help our school best meet the needs of our students. We are encouraged by your words of support and we thank all of you for your patience and understanding.

PARKING ON THE LOWER FIELD CLOSED:
Thank you for not parking on the lower field. A month of school has gone by with the hope that you have become familiar with our school enough to drop off and pick up at the top or bottom parking lots. Parking is still available on Mokulele Drive if you would like to continue walking your child to class. We apologize for the inconvenience, but we feel our KEIKI come first. The parking on the field will be limited due to tire tracks from the usage of vehicles creating unevenness on the surface on the field causing students to trip and stumble. During the raining months, tire tracks cause water to accumulate forming huge mud puddles. Since the closing of the field, around March of last school year, the tire tracks have been filled in and the grass has grown back. The field looks good and our students are again safe. Limiting the field for parking creates a safe environment for students to walk through after school to get home. Sometimes students are so excited to see their parents who are parked on the field, they do not watch for cars, especially since the cars are parked where they normally play, and do not have to watch for vehicles. We will be opening the field for parking at large school events when we will have extra personnel watching out for our Keiki. We appreciate your willingness to keep our Keiki safe!

Menehune Fun Run
On Friday, January 22, 2010, Kaneohe Elementary will be holding it annual KES Menehune Run for Reading 2010. This Fun Run promotes healthy bodies while raising money for our minds. For every $25 collected, you will receive one Fun Run T-shirt. Classrooms with an average donation of $20 per child will win a pizza party. Your generous donations have provided us playground structures and reading materials. We need your help again this year to reach our goal of $12,000 to upgrade our technology to support reading. Sponsorship Envelopes are due next Thursday, Dec. 10.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING
When we count... our many blessings...
It isn't hard to see...
that life's most valued treasures are the treasures that are free.
For it isn't what we own or buy that signifies our wealth...
It's the special gifts that have no price...
our family, friends and health.

As we all look toward Thanksgiving, I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for helping to make Kaneohe Elementary School a very special place. What could we be more thankful for, than to live in a place where people care? Where people don't turn their backs when their neighbors are hurting? Where people are not afraid to get involved? As we celebrate Thanksgiving, each and every one of you should appreciate your own personal blessings. We all have them. I know I do. But, we should also be thankful for the blessings we have as a community and a country. Sure, things are not perfect. But if we continue to look out for one another, I know that we will survive these challenging times. May your heart be glad and your home be happy at this joyful time of thanksgiving,
- Mitchell Otani

STAY HEALTHY, STOP THE FLU:
The World Health Organization declared a swine flu pandemic on June 11, 2009 - the first global flu epidemic in 41 years. Scientists don't yet know if it takes fairly close or prolonged contact with someone who's sick, or if it's more easily spread. In general, flu viruses are spread through uncovered coughs and sneezes or by touching your mouth/nose with unwashed hands.
*Eat, rest, drink plenty of fluids, exercise and get vaccinated yearly.
*Wash your hands frequently or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
*Clean hard surfaces such as doorknobs and telephones with disinfecting wipes.
*Cover your nose and mouth with the inside of your elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze and encourage others to do the same.
*Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
*Put tissues in the trash.
*Stay home if you are ill, and keep your children home from school if they are ill.
*Avoid close contact with sick people.

OFF-CAMPUS EVACUATION
to Castle High School A big mahalo to all of the volunteers for their help in making our Campus Evacuation a success. The entire evacuation and return trip took 1 hour and 12 minutes. Special thanks to the teachers for their preparation and to the Safety Committee, especially Mrs. Araki and Mrs. Bissen for their attention to detail while finalizing the planning and procedures to make the trip a safe one for our students.

RUN AND READ FOR LITERACY
A big mahalo to all of the participants in the PACT Kaneohe Community Family Center and Read To Me International 6th Annual Run & Read for Literacy. Kaneohe Elementary received $7.00 for every $10.00 entry fee and we will use this money to support the literacy efforts of our library. Each participant also received a Run & Read T-shirt and a goodie bag with a read aloud book and a Pizza Hut Carryout for Literacy Card.

CONTRABAND:
Please have your child(ren) bring only items they need for school, such as books, supplies and other materials needed for school assignments. The following items are not allowed at school: Yu-gi-oh/Pokemon cards, ipods/CD players, laser pointers, skateboards, game boys, DS's, radios, hand held electronic games, toys, bakugan, heeleys, mouth spray & deodorant. Students should not bring large amounts of money or valuables to school. Often, these items get lost or misplaced. Many difficult situations can be avoided if they are left at home. Consequences may include parent notification, detention and confiscation of contraband items. Cellular phones are permitted, but must be put away or handed over to the teacher for safekeeping. If your child is in the A+ program, school rules still apply.

Kudos to the teachers who laid the foundation for success for Miranda Linsky as well as for Amelia Linsky, National Merit Semi-Finalist last year and Mari Miyoshi, the year before. Amelia is at Middlebury College and Mari is attending Brown University
